Geo Eksperts is carrying out one of the largest geotechnical investigation projects in the company's history

July 7, 2026 at 12:17 pm, No comments

Since February 2026, Geo Eksperts Ltd. has been carrying out geotechnical investigations for the Rail Baltica project in Estonia. The works are being performed within the CP1 Embankment section near Tootsi (Parnu district) and represent one of the largest geotechnical investigation projects undertaken by our company to date.

The field investigations cover more than 11 kilometres of the planned railway alignment and are being executed in several phases. To date, the investigation programme has included:

  • 89 geotechnical boreholes
  • 61 Cone Penetration Tests (CPTu)
  • 133 Dynamic Probing Super Heavy (DPSH-A) soundings
  • 19 groundwater monitoring standpipes (piezometers)
  • 12 Field Vane Tests (FVT)
  • 15 high-quality undisturbed (Class A) Shelby samples for laboratory determination of mechanical soil properties

The investigations are being carried out under demanding site conditions, including peatlands, waterlogged ground and recently clear-cut forest areas, where access to investigation points is often possible only with tracked equipment and excavator assistance. During the spring thaw, high groundwater levels, deep forestry ruts and very low bearing capacity of the near-surface soils created additional logistical challenges and significantly influenced field operations.

Despite these conditions, the project is progressing according to schedule. The field investigation programme is expected to be completed in mid-July 2026, while laboratory testing, interpretation of the investigation results and preparation of the Geotechnical Investigation Report (GIR) will continue throughout August.

The project covers the complete geotechnical investigation cycle – from field investigations and sampling to laboratory testing, geological interpretation and preparation of the final Geotechnical Investigation Report in accordance with Eurocode 7 and the Rail Baltica Design Guidelines.

Rail Baltica is one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently under development in the Baltic States, and we are proud to contribute to its implementation by providing comprehensive geotechnical investigation services for the future railway infrastructure.
